If you’re trying to find a postcode or look up an address, the best place to start is the Royal Mail website. They offer a free Postcode Finder that both businesses and individuals can use, with a daily limit of up to 50 searches.
What Are Postcodes?
Postcodes were originally introduced by Royal Mail between 1959 and 1974 to make postal delivery faster and more efficient. Since then, they’ve become an essential tool for business planning, logistics, sales territories, and location analysis across the UK.
A valid UK postcode is made up of a combination of letters and numbers, typically 5–7 characters long, which identifies a specific address or small group of properties. Each postcode has two parts:
-
Outward Code – the first part, which identifies the postal area and district
-
Inward Code – the second part, which pinpoints the exact delivery area
Together, a full postcode usually represents around 15 delivery points on average.
Postcodes operate at four levels. Take, for example, the Postcode SW18 1AZ
Level 1: Area
The UK is divided 124 postcode areas and each area is identified by the first two letters of the postcode (example SW). Each area has on average 183,000 delivery points. If you are looking for a postcode map to show postcodes at an area level, then please download our Free postcode map.
Level 4: Units
Unit postcodes pinpoints a group of houses or addresses. Some organisations are allocated a unique Postcode to ensure the segregation of large deliveries of mail to a single address. This level of postcode is far too detailed to be able produce a range of maps, there are over 1.8 million unit postcodes that cover approximately 29 million address across the country.
